The Neologi Synagogue in Brasov is a monument worth visiting. With a special aspect, the Jewish place of worship on Poarta Schei street no. 29 was included in the list of historical monuments from Brasov county in 2015.
The construction of the edifice lasted 2 years between 1899 and 1901, and the building is easily distinguished from the surrounding ones thanks to the neo-Gothic style with Moorish influences, Gothic and Romanesque decorative elements with three ships. It also benefited from a renovation that was done with the 100th anniversary of its construction.
The number of Jews in Brasov was steadily increasing, from 769 Jews in 1890 to 6000 in 1940. During the Second World War, their safety was ensured by the city of Brasov and they were not transported to camps, but they still suffered beatings. and were eliminated from economic life. Although they had to endure very difficult conditions and were humiliated (they did not have the right to choose their jobs, they only worked on the positions refused by the Saxons), with the passage of time it was proved that the Jews contributed a lot to the city's economy. .
Around this place of worship, the Jews built a traditional restaurant, a medical office and many more to facilitate their stay. But due to the division in 1877 of the Jews into the group of orthodox rites, respectively of the neolog rite, at present, Brasov has two synagogues (the orthodox rite and the neolog rite).
The Neological Synagogue was built following the plans of the Hungarian architect Lipot Baumhorn, as a result, this synagogue has the plan of a basilica with a total area of over 600 square meters. Included in the list of historical monuments of Brasov, you can attend with interest the rituals held in the Neological Synagogue.
The price of an adult ticket is 5 lei and for children or students 2.5 lei. The visit schedule is from Monday to Friday from 09:00 until 16:00.
Also for those who still can't reach but would like to see the synagogue, you must know that there are dedicated sites that will provide virtual tours. Whether you are more faithful or not, it is worth visiting this synagogue.
