The fortress on the Straja hill is one of the symbols of the city and a great attraction for tourists. Initially, on the Schlossberg hill, the one on which the fortress is located today, in 1524, a watchtower was built, made of stone and brick, in the form of a horseshoe.
In 1625 the fortress was rebuilt and during that period the well 81 m deep was dug out of the fortress court. The quadrilateral fortification with Italian bastions in the corners, above which defense towers were built, had a single entrance accessible through a movable bridge.
Access to Cetățuie can be done in two ways, the first one is by car, and the second one is on the alley towards Cetățuie on Mihai Eminescu street.
