Sforii Street in Brașov is the narrowest street in Eastern Europe and is also included in the famous Michelin travel guide. This street is located between Cerbul and Poarta Șchei streets. Its width varies from a minimum of 1.10 meters to a maximum of 1.35 meters in some areas, which gives it the status of the narrowest street.
Sforii Street from Brașov has a total length of 80 meters and initially had the role of facilitating the access of firefighters to Șchei in case a fire broke out. Although it is the narrowest street in Eastern Europe, it also ranks 3rd in the top of the narrowest streets in Europe, the first being a street in Germany that has a width of at least 31 cm and a maximum of 50 cm. What is very interesting about this street is the fact that it looks the same as it was 100 years ago.
During the Communist period of this street, he was not given too much attention, not knowing that it can become a special tourist attraction. The street gives uniqueness to the city, many foreigners coming to visit the city just for this street. However, only in 1998, this street received a small refresh with the help of a sportsman from Brasov who returned to the country from America. More precisely this sportsman was called Dan Oprea and being dissatisfied with how the street looks he invested a modest amount for a tourist attraction, specifically 8000 euros to change the look of the street.
But it is only in 2003 that it becomes a tourist attraction in the true sense of the word. Also this year the passage and walls were redone. The lanterns that illuminate the small street look exactly like 100 years ago. Only nowadays LED technology is used, they look exactly the same as being custom made according to the models found in museums but adapted to operate with electricity and not with gas as it was 100 years ago.
After the renovation, the street was included in the great tour guides that presented Brasov and was promoted through the tourist fairs in Europe. In this way, the number of visitors has increased considerably. A great achievement was when the little street received a star in the "Michelin" travel guide, which recommends it to be seen. Also, the American publication The Huffington Post included Strada Sforii in a top of the world's narrowest alleys alongside streets in Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Canada, the USA, and China.
Now the street is famous for selfies on the Internet, many people photographing here. Also, Strada Sforii also has a legend of the lovers. It is rumored that in the medieval period on this street, couples or young people in love were hiding in order to be able to kiss in privacy or to avoid parents who did not agree with the relationship. All this legend says that the young lovers who kiss on this street are meant to stay together for a lifetime.
