The Black Tower is, at present, an exceptional tourist objective of Brașov. Along with the White Tower, it was an integral part of the defense chain used since the 15th century. The name of the fortification came as a result of the fire of the seventeenth century, as a result of which the walls darkened. The location offers a special panorama of the city, thanks to the height of the Black Tower which measures over 11 meters.
History and presentation
The Black Tower in Brașov was part of the city's defense strategy, being specially designed to identify the proximity of enemies to the city walls. Currently, it is recognized as one of the four observation towers found inside Brașov. Next to them, it forms an independent and strong fortification, with a height of at least 11 meters.
The Black Tower is located on a cliff of Warthe Hill. In the past, it played an important role in defending the city walls, which were located less than 5 meters from the rock. Subsequently, starting in 1819, this passage benefited from an extension in terms of area.
From an architectural point of view, the Black Tower covers 50 square meters. Only its walls are based on 2 meters thick, while the interior benefited from a connection system through which it could communicate directly with the Citadel. This strategy was based on a drawbridge, which could be left as far as the Blacksmith's Bastion.
The construction process related to the fortification took place in the 15th century, during which the White Tower was also built. According to official documents, the year in which the tower was first mentioned is 1541. Quite a few elements remain from the original appearance, most of which have been replaced as a result of:
• July 23, 1559 - the roof was destroyed by a strong lightning;
• 1689 - the walls darkened as a result of a fire;
• 1696 - another lightning struck the roof;
• July 4, 1991 - a torrential downpour led to the collapse of the southern wall.
